Section Rendering: Coloring in PhotoShop

Rendering from following video by Dangeroris

The following video visually outlines the workflow in making an architectural section. The initial section can be created by hand, in CAD, Revit, Sketchup or whichever software you are proficient in. I recommend using whichever program you work with the fastest. Follow the workflow from the following video:

  1. Import Section (import pdf)
  2. Color the section in black
  3. Color materials and ground (gradients)
  4. Shade material
  5. Add direct shadows to highlight architectural features
  6. Add sky (either color or sky pic)
  7. Add people / furniture / vehicles

Of course you can always add landscaping, cars, or furniture if you want. Use your best judgement in what will represent your idea the best. To better understand the Photoshop methods used to create a section, see Learn how to Create and Architectural Section Rendering in Photoshop. To understand how to export a section from Sketchup and render it in Photoshop, see Section Rendering: Sketchup and Photoshop.

Additional Information

If you are looking to buy a book on computer rendering, Bradley Cantrell and Wes Michaels' book, Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture: Contemporary Techniques and Tools for Digital Representation in Site Design, even though it is for landscaping outlines the requirements and techniques for Photoshop rendering. I usually buy 'em from an amazon seller for cheaper. Always be sure check seller reviews!

Also check this book on Architectural Sections, Manual of Section by Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, and David J. Lewis. Debates about a project and its  section are common and can often be intense. Every project needs Sections in order to explore relationships. Until now, however, there has been no framework to describe or evaluate the art of Section making until this book.
